Our 2025-26 Scholar Classes (Youth 12+):

We have embraced Thomas Jefferson Education as our commonwealth’s educational methodology. TJEd is also known as “Leadership Education.” And the leader in LE is not just the kid that grows up in your home or studies in your classroom under these principles; it’s you! YOU lead out and show them the way. You get excited about education – not just theirs, but yours.

Most of our Scholar Classes follow a curriculum created by LEMI (Leadership Education Mentoring Institute). We encourage you to learn more about them and consider if you would like to mentor one. Each of these projects/classes is taught by a parent who was trained in this specific project/class.

SWORD OF FREEDOM & THE HERO PROJECT

PREREQUISITES: 13 years and up, completed Key of Liberty or mentor approval

This class is two semesters long, with each semester focusing on a specific era.

Sword of Freedom (First Semester)

Sword of Freedom is a Transition-to-Apprentice Scholar Project on the LEMI continuum. The objective of each scholar project is to motivate the scholar to do the hard work of learning through: inspiring mentors, positive peer pressure, a culminating activity and a fun learning environment.

This class studies the principles of freedom and the constitution against the dramatic backdrop of the Civil War. It dares scholars to read challenging classics, to decide and discuss their opinions, to write a research paper about one of their heroes from the time period.

We fight battles everyday, our principles and values are going to be tested. How and where do we find truth? Where we find truth determines on which side of the battle we find ourselves. Scholars will discover where their allegiance lies and explore ways it might be tested in the safe environments of simulations and discussions.

The Hero Project (Second Semester)

Scholars will continue being inspired to work hard to learn in the same great learning environments as Sword of Freedom. Hero Project is a study of  World War 2 and its heroes. Scholars will learn some reasons why the world went to war and the consequences of it. They will continue to explore allegiance and truth. Scholars will be mentored by both the living and the dead as they read their stories and interview veterans. They will realize that every person has a unique mission to perform in this life. Eisenhower didn’t win the War. Churchill didn’t win the War. The man swabbing the deck did. The men who built the planes did. The women who put together the code breaking machines did. They all had their part in the ultimate victory, and it wouldn’t have happened without each and every one of them working together toward a common goal.

SHAKESPEARE CONQUEST

PREREQUISITES: 12 Years and older

Shakespeare Conquest is the first Practice Scholar Project in the LEMI continuum. The objective of each Practice Scholar Project is to motivate the scholar to do the hard work of learning through: inspiring mentors, positive peer pressure, a culminating activity, outward motivations to choose (competitions and rewards), completing the project, and by planting seeds of determination to do hard work.

During the first semester, scholars become familiar with the challenging language of Shakespeare by studying a Shakespearean tragedy. The scholars will further be challenged to give an oral presentation on medieval life and history, watch or read at least 7 of Shakespeare’s plays, memorize a passage from a play, and participate in a Medieval Family Fair.

The second semester focuses on actor training and implementing everything learned about language and human nature by preparing and performing a Shakespeare Comedy for performance in the spring. As all the hours of labor for the play are volunteer, families should be prepared to assist in some way to help make this a grand experience!

Scholars can also look forward to earning the right to be crowned, going to a Shakespeare play, and attending Shakespeare camp at the end of the school year.

It is estimated that scholars will study 5-10 hours per week preparing for this class, with additional time demands in preparation for the play in March.
